I’ve never done Pilates before. Do I need to take one-on-one sessions before starting group classes?
It is generally recommended that a new student take a few one-on-one Pilates sessions before starting group classes. If this is prohibitive because of cost or scheduling, we recommend taking a few of our Beginning-level classes to learn some of the fundamental principles and to determine if Pilates is right for you. If you have injuries or chronic pain that you are working with, you might also try taking some of our Feldenkrais classes in tandem with Pilates.
I’m interested in doing duet sessions. Do I need to come with my own partner or will you match me with one?
We ask that you come with your own partner that you’re interested in exercising with. You should both be injury-free and at about the same level of physical ability. We will ask you to schedule your sessions as a unit, with the understanding that if one of you is unable to make it you will both still be charged for your session.
Do I need to make a reservation?
Reservations are not required. Our classes do tend to fill up, though, and if you're worried about not getting a spot you can make a reserve online. Please note that there is an 8-hour cutoff for canceling reservations without being charged.
What should I wear?
Wear whatever you are comfortable exercising in. People generally wear sweatpants, shorts, tights or unitards. Shoes are not an issue as you will either be in bare feet or socks during your class or session. Layering is a good idea.
Class Descriptions
Pilates Mat is a series of simple yet challenging exercises designed to align, open, and strengthen the body with an emphasis on core support and use of breath.
Beginning: This class is designed for people new to the Pilates Method as well as those looking to slow down and review some of the basics of their matwork technique. Focus is on establishing the biomechanical foundations to work safely and effectively within the technique, as well as familiarizing students with the choreography of some of the simpler Pilates exercises.
Beginning/Intermediate: Adding a little more flow and challenge to the work, the intermediate class assumes the student has a knowledge of Pilates fundamentals and an understanding of how to modify exercises for her own specific physical challenges. Attention is given to developing clear execution of the exercises of the foundational Pilates mat routine so the student can build a repertory to use at home.
Intermediate and Intermediate/Advanced: Begins with the same assumptions as Intermediate class, with the introduction of more advanced variations and a focus of building more strength, coordination and accuracy within the work. Whole-body movement is emphasized and refined.
Open Level: This class is designed for Pilates students of all levels. Basic and intermediate Pilates exercises are woven into the work with time taken to address common trouble spots and biomechanical challenges in safe and effective ways. While some familiarity with the work is helpful, explanations will accommodate a range of experiences.
Get Engaged: is a Pilates Ring (aka Magic Circle) class that, using the added weight and resistance provided by the ring, goes for purely aesthetic improvement of "problem areas." A good foundation in Pilates Mat is strongly recommended.
In Pilates, good form and effective body mechanics have a huge impact on how effective your Pilates workout will be. Therefore, even if you are advanced in another discipline, or are in phenomenal shape, but have never studied pilates, we strongly recommend that you begin with some of the beginner classes. If you are able to, it is almost always a sound investment to work one on one with a trainer before entering a group class, especially if you have specific physical challenges or goals. Please always feel free to ask a teacher if you would like feedback as to what level you should be working at. We are happy to work with you so that you can best benefit from your time with us.
